Headsmart have launched a campaign to help parents spot brain tumours early. In the UK it can take over 3 months to diagnose a brain tumour compared to 4 weeks in the US and Canada. Because tumours continue to grow, the earlier it is diagnosed the less brain damage and disability it will cause, and the better the overall outcome.
The signs of a brain tumour – vomiting, headaches, blurred vision and loss of coordination – are easily mistaken for more common illnesses. GP’s only come across 1 or 2 cases of child brain tumours in their career hence brain tumours can easily go undetected. Headsmart, through a website, leaflets and pocket-sized symptoms cards now educate parents and health professionals to help drive down diagnosis time in children.
Brain Tumours are still very rare with 500 new cases per year in the UK but we could all do with more education to spot the symptoms faster. Visit Headsmart to improve your awareness.
If you know of a child who exhibits two or more of the symptoms listed take them to your GP right away and bring the Headstart leaflet with you. Download it at http://www.headsmart.org.uk/admin/uploads/8pp_leaflet_lo_res.pdf
